Can I jump with my special health condition or physical challenge? Skydiving is possible for more people than you might imagine. We've made successful jumps with many people that have special concerns. Each situation is evaluated on a case by case basis, and you should always seek your doctor's advice. Expect to spend at least two hours at the drop zone. What if it rains? All AFP Students doing their first jump class should come regardless of the weather. Tandems should call before they leave. What should I wear? You should wear comfortable clothes appropriate for the season; shorts and T-shirt for a hot day are fine and if it's colder long pants and a comfortable long sleeved shirt. All students get equipped with a jumpsuit and goggles. Please wear sneakers - no Boots, shoes with hooks or sandals. What time should I arrive? Please plan sign in one half hour before your class begins. How high do you go? Skydive Long Island is the only dropzone on Long Island going to 13,500 feet. How many people jump at once? Skydive Long Island uses a variety of aircraft, including turbines. Depending on many factors we can accommodate between 3 -7 Tandem students at a time. Under specific conditions, more. Do I have to do a Tandem first? We require that you do at least 3 tandem skydives before entering our student program. Skydiving is not as simple as jumping out of the plane and pulling a ripcord. Having an experienced instructor with you to help get you acclimated is the best way to ensure your safety and enjoyment while you are introduced to this exciting sport. How hard is the landing? All the parachutes used at Skydive Long Island are Ram Air (square) parachutes, which are highly maneuverable. They can slow down to a great degree allowing you to stand up or slide onto the ground on your bottom. What if I wear glasses or contact lenses? No problem, we supply goggles that will fit over your glasses and also keep your contacts in place. What if I get sick? A few people have been known to get motion sickness under the parachute but not in freefall. In freefall you will feel like you are just floating on a column of air, there is no feeling of height or falling. If you are susceptible to motion sickness, perhaps a Gravol or Dramamine will help. Ensure you inform your instructor of your tendency of getting motion sickness. Should I get Video? Of course, if it's your first jump, then it is a no brainer. You WANT a souvenir. You will never forget your first jump, none of us ever do, BUT Skydiving is such a high speed and intense experience, many people do not recall a lot of the details of their jump. In the years to come, you can share the experience with your friends and family. Can I split the Video with someone else? Unfortunately, no. The video person jumps with just one Tandem and films just one person while in freefall. Our camera flyer can film you and your friend on the ground, in the aircraft and sometimes during landing. We cannot film two separate tandems in freefall with one video package. What kind of plane do you fly? Our fleet is currently comprised of 1 Cessena Grand Caravan (19 places), 1 King Air (14 places), with several specialty aircraft scheduled throughout the season What if my parachute doesn't open? All sport parachute systems contain two parachutes, a main and a reserve. The instructors are highly trained on the use of the system and while the need to use the reserve is very rare, it does happen occasionally. All of our student systems are equipped with an automatic activation device, AAD, which is a sophisticated on board computer that senses speed and altitude. The computer is designed to activate the reserve parachute if it senses that you are too close to the ground and falling too fast. Is skydiving safe? We work very hard to make your skydive as safe as it can be. That being said, please do not lose sight of the fact that you are jumping out of an airplane. Can I bring a cooler, frisbee, pet? You are welcome to bring a frisbee or other items to keep you occupied while you're waiting to jump. Coolers are fine so long as there is no alcohol. ALCOHOL is strictly prohibited on the airport during operating hours. If we suspect you've been drinking YOU WILL NOT skydive, and you will be asked to leave. Please leave pets at home, no dogs are allowed on the airport. How long is the jump? You'll spend about 12-15 minutes in the plane, up to one minute in freefall, and 5 minutes under the parachute. Can I jump with my friends? We'll do everything we can to put you on the same plane with whom ever you choose, but we can not guarantee it. |
