The effects of skydiving on the brain and skydiving health benefits in general are SO vast that this article will only scratch the surface. One of the biggest misconceptions about skydiving is that everyone who does it is a huge thrill-seeker and adrenaline junkie. That's just not the case!
Skydiving is a - dare we say - magical experience that we have the opportunity to do over and over again. The freedom that comes from skydiving is physical and mental, and this newfound mindset doesn't go away when you land, but is something you can bring into every facet of your life! Let's take a look at our top four freedoms to be gained from skydiving.
Let's talk about exactly what kind of skydive exercise happens when we leap from a plane, freefall for about 1 mile at around 120mph, and then slowly glide in for landing back to Earth. Our bodies are subjected to strenuous physical and mental challenges while skydiving, not necessarily because it's hard, but because skydiving isn't something that you do every day - unless you're really lucky.
It's like this: you might lift weights for your arms 5x a week in the gym, but then skip leg day. So even though you're considered to be in really good shape, the second you do some calf raises or hamstring curls you'll really feel the burn. We aren't able to simultaneously workout all the muscles that are used in a skydive on the ground, and the same goes for simulating the jump for our mind - it's impossible! Skydiving is just ... wonderfully different. Let's talk about how and why it's like a workout for both mind AND body!
There are a slew of reasons why people skydive. The answers are not always what you think they are and can be different for everyone!
Some people skydive for the freedom they feel when they jump out of a "perfectly good airplane." Some people do it for the thrill. Some actually use skydiving to get over their fear of heights. And some people just love a good ol' fashioned unobstructed, bird's-eye view of our magnificent planet Earth. But most people skydive for fun!
We've all heard of dancing or singing in the rain, but what about SKYDIVING in the rain? And with your tandem skydiving reservation on the horizon you may be worried about the skydive weather forecast and what that could mean for your future plans. Skydiving weather has a few important factors that could impact your skydiving such as cloud cover, high wind gusts, and RAIN! Let's address the effects of rain on your skydive, skydiving weather requirements, and whether or not you can even skydive in the rain!
Adventure and life-changing experiences are trending right now! More and more people are interested in spending money on EXPERIENCES rather than on material items - like skydiving! But if you're ballin' on a budget you may be thinking about ways to budget for your first skydive. There are ways to make your dreams of flying a reality without completely limiting yourself, and we promise it's worth it!
For wingless creatures, we humans sure are fascinated with the idea of flight. And we're also quite preoccupied with pushing the limits and enjoying ourselves while doing it! Enter skydiving - a no-experience necessary, super-awesome-epic way to fly through the skies! Bonus: it's crazy fun and we can do it over and over again if we so choose!
We get asked a lot, "what does skydiving feel like?" When people imagine going skydiving, they are often picturing themselves falling through the sky with that roller-coaster feeling in their belly. Despite literally plummeting through the sky toward Earth, there is none of that sensation you would expect. Why is that, and what does skydiving actually feel like?
Everyone knows that when you skydive, you are jumping out of a plane and falling through the sky toward the ground. But exactly how fast do you fall when skydiving? When you make a tandem skydive, you fall at about 120 mph on average, but the skydiving speed depends on a few things. Check it -
If you're trying to have the most adventurous 24 hours ever, you might be interested in scuba diving and flying (and jumping out of that perfectly good plane!) all in the same day. It's a cool idea - and also a potentially very dangerous one.
There are lots of skydiving rules and recommendations that cover a multitude of topics you probably wouldn't have thought to even associate with skydiving. For instance, it can be an issue to scuba and fly within a short period of time. Both are extreme types of diving, but one is miles above the ground and the other is below sea level.
Let's be real, nobody really says "dive" when talking about skydiving but we just couldn't miss out on the punny opportunity! Get it?!?!
Anyway ... the question is: can you drink before skydiving? The answer is, no. Some people are totally ready to take the plunge and go all-in for their first time skydiving experience, but some others feel the need to fuel up with a little liquid courage to muster the bravery to go skydiving. However, it is PROHIBITED to have any alcohol in your system the day of your skydive.
In the sport of skydiving, the mental and physical game go hand-in-hand - which is why your body might try and do some funky things that you aren't used to. Luckily, there are a few easy, yet very important, skydiving dos and don'ts that can make your experience an amazing (or awful) one.
Have you been feeling a bit tense lately, and want to do something mega to take the edge off of those everyday stressors? Or maybe you've been feeling kind of low and need a boost of empowerment? We suggest giving skydiving therapy a shot. Skydiving therapy? Yup, that's right! It might sound crazy to skydive for mental health, but jumping out of a plane can actually really help you both mentally, emotionally and physically. Although not the conventional form of therapy, the benefits of skydiving are many. Believe us when we say that it can be seriously therapeutic to get your knees in the breeze.
No matter where you skydive, there is a skydiving age limit ... and, for the most part, in the US you'll find that the skydiving age is the same across the board. Here in New York at Skydive Long Island, we have the same legal age to skydive as most dropzones around the country: 18 years old.
Let's be honest, tandem skydiving can be nerve-wracking, especially the first time. You're not only fully trusting in someone you've never even met before, but you're also trusting yourself, and that's a pretty big mental feat. Skydiving is more mental than physical in many ways.
Nowadays, we share just about everything across social media. Sometimes we showcase the real-real, and a lot of times our photos aren't exactly truthful. I mean, we all have a couple photos where we're feeling not-so-good but we look fantastic, right? Well, you can't pull any tricks with skydiving photos! They're raw and real, and show your every emotion - mostly photos that scream, WOOOOHOOOO!
Though it might appear like skydivers are a bunch of adrenaline-seekers looking for a thrill, there are strict skydiving rules and regulations that we are required to follow. Skydiving requirements range from weather regulations to age and weight requirements. Adhering to rules like these helps us all to stay safe, which makes doing what we love so much more enjoyable and rewarding. Here's the skinny on skydiving regulations and protocols- -

The human body is nothing short of amazing. When called upon, our bodies are capable of operating at a much higher level than when we are at rest. This is called our fight or flight response - a reactive state that we developed over time to preserve our safety and to ensure our success.
Asking someone to spend the rest of their life with you is a big deal. Setting the stage for a meaningful and memorable proposal is key, and creating an event that is spectacular and original that will make for a great story for years to come will score big-time brownie points. Nothing checks all the boxes like a skydiving engagement! Sound bonkers? It's not! Skydiving proposals and even skydiving weddings are more popular than you might think! Let's get into the details of skydiving marriage proposals -
Why do people skydive? What is it about jumping from an airplane that appeals so much to humans? Are skydivers crazy?
People skydive for a lot of reasons. It's a challenge, a thrill ... the most fun ever. But it is not only a playground for stereotypical, wild-eyed adrenalin junkies. One of the most interesting and fulfilling parts of skydiving is that there is not a single kind of person that does it, and the skydiving community is made up of people of all ages and from all walks of life. The important thing to know and understand about the type of person who skydives, is that no matter where they come from, they share some common motivations with other people found at the dropzone and in the sky.
How much do you really know about skydiving? If you've never done it before, chances are you're coming up short on your skydiving facts. You probably think it's cool, and you're definitely right about that. You might think jumping out of a plane is something everybody should do at least once, and we certainly agree with you there. What else comes to mind? Maybe, what does skydiving feel like? Or, is skydiving scary? Or the age-old question: does your stomach drop when skydiving?
The songs that make our personal Top 40 are typically a mix of music that amps us up, chills us out, and meets the moment. And it can serve as an important - or even transformative - element to a profound experience. Skydiving most definitely qualifies as a profound experience, and combining your soundtrack with skydiving sounds amazing. But ... it's not quite that simple. Before you make the ultimate modern-day "Songs for Skydiving" mixtape, let's answer the question: Can you listen to music while skydiving?
Many of the questions you might have about how to get started in skydiving are answered by the tandem skydive. The feeling of exiting an aircraft and falling back towards the earth at 120mph is difficult to accurately describe to others - and after trying to properly explain it for a while, you'll likely aim to convince them to just try it for themselves!
But how do you explain what tandem skydiving is!? Let's get into it ...
We used to believe some wacky things.
For example, when humans began weighing up the idea of freefall, it was considered smart to do so curled into a ball in case the rapidly increasing velocity would rip any extended limbs right off your body!! Thankfully this was not found to be true, and over time we figured out that we can not only freefall through the sky in a comfortable, open position, but that doing so let's you manipulate the air with very precise control.
Here at Skydive Long island, we are intentional about making tandem skydiving accessible and work hard to make your first skydive nothing short of amazing and highly memorable. Once you are committed to jumping out of a plane, your brain will likely fill with questions that mostly revolve around the idea of how to do it right. The good news is, you'll be given information and guidance at every step of the way - when to arrive and to correctly prepare, do the required (straightforward) paperwork, and nail the (fairly easy) physical tasks.
Being anxious about going skydiving for the first time is completely normal. In the grand scheme of things we humans are land animals, and only very recently have figured out ways to take to the sky. One of the very best things about skydiving is that as soon as you jump, any fear and anxiety you were carrying instantly vanishes - and there is only the freedom and joy of being up there in the open sky.

Skydiving can have a deep and profound effect on the way you view the world and travel through it as a person. Jumping out of an aircraft and falling back to earth using only gravity and a parachute to return you to terra firma is far more than a bucket-list goal that we do because we can - it can also have a powerful and lasting positive influence on both your physical and mental wellbeing. This can be attributed to a few things, so let's examine the health benefits of skydiving ...

The debate is still open. But, now that a skydive is on the books, you think it could be the perfect time to find out.
People's general perception of what skydiving involves is quite dramatic. Skydiving is an intense, thrilling experience that can very much change your life for the better. Here at Skydive Long Island we jump from 13,500ft (the highest altitude generally used for skydiving) which means you freefall for about one minute. There is more to it than just this part though, and it all adds up to an amazing experience. Let's investigate a little bit...

Skydiving is the original extreme sport, and such pursuits are hard on your body, right? Extreme sports are loosely defined as including an element of risk, and while leaping out of airplanes does indeed have some risk involved - it is way, way more managed and precise than it is often presented. Skydiving is an intense, thrilling experience but it is also a sport, a lifestyle, and a full-time occupation - in which training, experience, and technology are all applied thoroughly to make it comfortable and repeatable. Without prior knowledge, it is quite easy to think that jumping out of an airplane, deploying a parachute and landing on the ground is tough on your back - but with just a small amount of the right training and information it is an active but entirely non-violent good time. Here is a bit of detail...
Though we've been told time and time again that patience is a virtue, playing the waiting game is easier said than done! It's not necessarily anyone's fault: we live in a society that favors instant gratification, and in many respects (think instant messaging, on-demand viewing, and lightning-fast internet connections) our world has been fashioned around an infatuation with the expeditious.
Skydiving is very definitely a sport. Before learning about what is involved, it can be tricky to imagine exactly how this is so - but skydiving has its own global competition circuit, and there are world records and championships people chase with dedication and seriousness. Jumping out of planes is also a leisure activity and an experience that has been carefully developed to allow as many people to access it as possible. The aspiration to capitalize on the life we've got-to take moments great and small and imbue them with meaning-resonates generationally. This pressing purpose is why you're just as likely to see a fresh-faced 18 year old outfitted in the heavy-duty hardware of a skydiving harness as you are to see the visage of a venerable elder peeking behind the clear-plastic of skydiving goggles. There is no specific answer for why people skydive. Although, there is a common theme amongst those who choose to make the leap: a desire to live life to the fullest.
Heart pumping. Fingernail biting. White knuckling. Just thinking about skydiving elevates our senses and we know it will for you, too. However, an elevated heart rate means different things to different people. If you are managing health conditions, but skydiving is on your bucket list, then this article is for YOU! Here we discuss the possibilities of skydiving with medical conditions.
Wondering about whether it is hard to breathe while skydiving is a perfectly normal thing to do. People are generally a bit anxious about flinging themselves out of an airplane in the first place, and when you add being really high up and falling really fast to the mental porridge it makes worrying about how to breathe while skydiving very common. Good news! You can breathe normally while skydiving, so you can stop worrying about it. It is worth breaking it down a bit though, so let's investigate...
One of the negative byproducts of living through a global pandemic is not having much to look forward to. In stressful times, our burdens can be eased knowing that a great vacation is just around the corner. The pandemic has muted all of that and it has left many of us searching for something to fill the void created by the numb repetition of quarantining, Zoom calls, elbow bumps, and facemasks.
Ah, yes. Tipping. Let's talk about this somewhat awkward topic and its expectations. To tip or not to tip - what is appropriate? In this article we're going to dig into the details about tipping your skydiving instructor, under what conditions this is appropriate and what the expectation is.
The wonders of skydiving are never ending. Perhaps that's why the sport attracts so many different people who create and enjoy such unique experiences such as skydiving at night. There are many things skydivers love about this sport, so let's explore why skydivers love skydiving at night!
Is skydiving safer than driving? The answer is surprising: statistically speaking, yes, skydiving is safer than driving. As you get behind the wheel for your daily commute, you may not even bat an eye, but did you know it's far more "dangerous" than jumping out of a "perfectly good airplane." It's true. Because of the routine created by our daily commute, the trips we take to the grocery store, or drives to and fro for coffees, lunch dates, and evening meetups, the risk of driving is buried in tedium. Nevermind, the majority of time spent on the road is time spent dangerously distracted. Now, if you mention skydiving, nine out of ten will see making the leap as considerably more threatening than an easy Sunday drive.
Tandem skydiving has now been a thing for a long time. Many decades of practice and technological advancement has refined and streamlined the process of jumping out of an aeroplane for the first time into a fine art. With just a small amount of information and practice on the ground, practically anyone can do it.
Nervous about skydiving for the first time? No sweat. Jumping from an airplane has its obvious risks and you would think we would receive queries about parachute malfunctions and their likelihood of occuring or our safety record, but that's not the case. The most common question we receive is "Does your stomach drop when you skydive?"
If you're searching for "what to write on your hands when skydiving" then it's likely you've booked your jump, locked down a media package and are now thinking about the finer details like adding messaging to your hands.
As a skydiving center you may think we'll tow the line and share that it's perfectly safe, but we won't do that. (We like to keep it real, here!). We're going to hone in on some important questions related to the safety of tandem skydiving.
If your first jump is coming up and you're making plans for that day and wondering how to prepare yourself, you've come to the right place! Parachuting started off as a military thing - but pretty quickly after realizing that jumping from the plane was easily the most fun part of their day, an assortment of soldiers and some handy friends set about how to turn skydiving into the best pastime ever. Once they got it figured out and 'sport jumping' became a thing, attention was then turned toward how to share such an amazing and life-changing experience with as many people as possible.

Dangling underneath some carefully sewn together fabric and flying about in the sky is an amazing thing that we get to do. In a relatively short span of years human beings have gone from staring up at birds and wondering by what magic they can do that, to deciphering the science of flight to the point we have portable magical backpacks that allow us to get up there and play along.
Without having already learned the differences, it is easy to forgive someone for thinking that jumping out of an aircraft or off the top of a big cliff or tall building is the same thing. It looks the same, right? Put on a backpack containing a parachute, jump, open parachute and then land. While BASE jumping and skydiving are indeed related in certain ways, there are some crucial differences that separate the two to the point where they are defined and considered as different sports.
If it is your first skydive with Skydive Long Island, you might be wondering what the experience will be like. With the following play by play of your day, we hope to put your mind at ease and your questions to rest. Here's what to expect from check-in to landing (and even after).
We'll give you a quick-and-dirty answer: No! Skydiving isn't great for everyone. We love skydiving with everything we've got, but we're totally okay with the fact that -- even side from the minimum age and weight restrictions -- jumping out of a plane isn't right for absolutely everyone. That said: We do want to be clear that skydiving is a great fit for more people than most folks think it is. Slightly contradictory? Sure. Let's dive in.
At the end of 2018, the Long Island Skydiving management team got together to review the year with one thought in mind: How do we get better? While 2018 was successful, it wasn't as smooth as we had hoped. There were friction points within the customer experience that was making the operation less efficient and as a result, was making our guests less happy.
Cold outside? Yeah, we know. If that leads you to the question of whether or not you can you go skydiving in winter, you're definitely one of us! The answer is yes, you can -- you just have to be a little more prepared than you would if you were jumping in the sultry summertime. If you know what to wear to go skydiving in colder conditions, not only can you skydive in winter, you can love wintertime skydiving! As long as the weather conditions are safe, skydiving is an all-season sport.
We'd better start with an admission: The "vs." up there isn't a thing we really feel. In fact, all of us at Skydive Long Island would very happily replace it with an all-caps AND. Skydiving and indoor skydiving are close cousins, sure, but they are very different experiences.
