Why Does Skydiving Cost So Much?

Published: June 28, 2016

Is skydiving expensive? Yes. However, the price is minimal when considering the amazing experience. We promise that you'll leave thinking it was well worth it! For this week's blog post, we thought it would be a good idea to share why the price of skydiving is so high.

How Much Does Skydiving Cost?

Here at Skydive Long Island, the price of a tandem skydive starts at $208 (with our online special rate). This means you'll be attached to an instructor, who is in charge of operating all parachute equipment and guiding you every step of the way.

Airplane Costs

Airplanes, obviously, play an essential role in skydiving. They are a big part of the experience of skydiving (in fact, seasoned jumpers will often seek out different planes to jump from to keep things interesting). But they are also one of the biggest costs.

Airplanes themselves cost tens of thousands of dollars to buy. The initial investment isn't the end either; skydiving planes require regular inspections and maintenance, which all have an associated cost.

The fuel we use in our airplanes is another expense in the overall cost of skydiving. Its price goes up and down just as the price of gasoline for your car does. It's an expense we have to factor into the average price of skydiving.

Skydiving Equipment

Skydivers jump with high-quality equipment. As you'd expect, our parachutes, rigs, automatic activation devices and helmets all cost money to buy and it's a price we're willing to pay.

Skydiving equipment has advanced over the years. Equipment manufacturers continue to innovate their designs and the technology they use. This has to be factored into the cost of skydiving too.

This equipment, like the airplanes we use, has to be maintained and updated as required, so it's not a one-off expenditure.

Staff

Whether you're jumping attached to an instructor or being taught to jump alone, you want to be sure that person has the experience and qualifications needed to do their job well.

Becoming an instructor requires the skydiver to have completed a number of jumps and then to participate in instructor training. To build up their experience over time is a significant expense to the individual and the courses have to be paid for too.

At Skydive Long Island, we compensate our valued instructors well to reflect their extensive training and experience, and this is another cost to factor in.

If you're thinking about trying skydiving for the first time, we really can't recommend it enough. Don't let the price put you off; it's a once in a lifetime experience that will stay with you forever. Check out our skydiving prices here or get in touch if we can answer any questions for you.
