Skydiving is a hugely popular sport here in the US. According to the US Parachute Association, there are 3 million skydives made each year by experienced skydivers who jump as a hobby, and by tandem skydivers and first timers.
Why Do People Skydive?
Why people skydive is a difficult question to answer if the person asking hasn't jumped. It's hard to describe the feeling of exhilaration and excitement as you exit a plane and fall at 120mph! Skydiving NYC is a huge rush, followed by incredible peace and fantastic views as you fly back to earth under your parachute.
Skydiving is a sport which attracts people with a thirst for adrenaline. It's a challenge to jump from a plane, and no one's going to tell you it's easy the first time. But once you've done it, you'll almost certainly want to do it again!
The Skydiving Community
Skydivers are a social group. The very fact you've participated in the sport together can bring you closer to your fellow jumpers on a personal level too.
Many skydivers get involved with the sport because of the perspective and fun it brings. Ask jumpers why the continue to jump and they'll tell you that it's the people. Skydivers represent different backgrounds, income levels, and employment. When you're wearing a jumpsuit, your socio-economic status doesn't matter. This equality is why so many people love the sport.
The community membership you get when you skydive is one of the best things about it for many people.
A Break from Reality
You probably lead a busy life, right? You've got a job, a family and responsibilities that can weigh on your mind.
But no one has ever, as far as we know, worried about daily challenges during freefall. Skydiving gives you a space to relax and free your mind off your stresses.
Understanding the Risk
Skydiving does involve risk. You can be seriously injured or killed skydiving, but like all things, the level of risk can be managed within a culture and focus on safety. According to the USPA, there is a 0.0007% chance of fatality when skydiving, which makes it statistically less risky than driving a car.
That said, it's still important to know that there is always a danger. It's possible that you could sustain an injury or worse and that risk is something all skydivers need to weigh up against the rewards.
You'll find the majority of skydivers accept the risk, but it's not why they do it. No one's jumps because they love flirting with danger. The attraction is the feeling of freedom, perspective, and community that the sport brings.
